The Skinny on the Atkins Grapefruit Diet

Wednesday, January 13th, 2010

If there is one thing that the majority of people are interested in today, it’s weight loss. The weight loss industry is a multibillion industry and people will do almost anything in order to take some shortcuts and cut some weight. The unfortunate thing is, many of these diets that are pushed on us are only the product of a commercial business and not really something that is going to help us to loose weight for the long term. There are a few exceptions, however, and some of these have been around for quite some time. An example of this is the Atkins grapefruit diet.

First of all, I need to point out the fact that even though many people are looking for the Atkins grapefruit diet, it is not actually a diet at all. What it is, on the other hand, is a made-up combination of two different diets that are very effective at helping you to lose weight but that can not be combined effectively. The first diet is the Atkins diet, made popular a couple of decades ago by a book that was written by Dr. Atkins. The grapefruit diet, on the other hand, has been around for quite some time and although nobody really knows where it came from originally, there have been many people that have lost weight successfully by using it.

The reason that the Atkins grapefruit diet could never exist is because the two different diets actually compromise each other in some way or another. For example, the Atkins diet is an extremely low carbohydrate diet that forces your body to go into ketosis, a condition in which your body will burn fat for fuel instead of carbohydrates. According to some of the research that I’ve read on the Atkins grapefruit diet, however, it requires you to eat a grapefruit or drink grapefruit juice with each meal. This would throw you out of ketosis, so it would make the low carbohydrate diet void.

The opposite is also true in the fact that the grapefruit diet is based more on fruits and vegetables, where the Atkins diet is based more on meat, eggs and cheese. It would be impossible for you to maintain the grapefruit diet while still trying to stick to the Atkins diet, as the type of foods that you would be eating would be contradictory to each other.

Instead of trying some kind of weird combination of the Atkins grapefruit diet, I would suggest that you either try one or the other or just go on a reasonable diet that is going to be easy for you to maintain. By reducing the number of calories that you are eating each day to well below what you are burning, you will lose weight consistently and you will not have to worry about tricking your body by cutting your carbohydrates down to nothing or eating grapefruit at every meal for its fat burning properties. A healthy diet will win out in the end every time.

What Is the Atkins Grapefruit Diet?

Tuesday, January 5th, 2010

Losing weight has become more of an interest for additional people, especially considering all of the hype that the weight loss industry is pumping into us on a regular basis.  Something that some people have been searching for in recent times, however, is the Atkins grapefruit diet.  There seems to be a little bit of confusion about this particular diet, and exactly what it is able to do for you and your weight loss efforts.  Perhaps it would be a good idea for us to take a look at two different diets and see exactly how they can fit together as the Atkins grapefruit diet.

The Atkins diet< was made popular several decades ago by a book that was written by Dr. Atkins.  In his book, he revealed that if you were to cut your carbohydrate levels down to almost nothing, you would throw your body into a condition that is known as ketosis.  During ketosis, the body burns fat for fuel because it does not have any carbohydrates available in order to use.  This is something that diabetics go into whenever they are having difficulties.  The Atkins diet was very popular, and still is with many individuals.  It allows you to eat things such as meat, eggs and butter without having to feel bad at all.  As long as your carbohydrate levels are low, the diet works and it worked very well.

Another very popular diet that has been around for a long time is the grapefruit diet.  In this diet, you eat a specified type of food but with every meal, you would have either a piece of grapefruit or grapefruit juice.  There is some kind of chemical in the grapefruit that promotes fat burning so that is the real basis of this particular diet.  Of course, it also has you eating healthy foods which is a good idea anyway whenever you are trying to cut weight.

The problem with the Atkins grapefruit diet is the fact that it tries to meld these two different diets into one.  It tells you that you are supposed to be eating low carbohydrates, as is popular on the Atkins diet but that you should be eating grapefruit, which is a carbohydrate with every meal.  The two of these diets do not go together and if you’re going to be doing it, you certainly are not going to be on the Atkins diet.  Many of the things that the Atkins diet has you eating is also not on the grapefruit diet.

If you want my advice on weight loss, forget about the Atkins grapefruit diet altogether.  If you want to lose weight on the Atkins diet, go on the Atkins diet.  If you want to lose weight on the grapefruit diet, stick to it faithfully.  You can also do yourself a favor and simply eat healthy for a period of time, get some exercise and drink plenty of water.  It’s the real way for you to lose weight and keep it off permanently.
