Does the Grapefruit Diet Really Work?

Monday, January 25th, 2010

There are so many different ways for you to lose weight that it can be difficult to keep up with them all.  One of the more interesting and a diet that has been around for quite some time, is the grapefruit diet.  Many people have used this throughout the ages in an attempt to lose weight, especially if they were trying to drop some weight quickly in order to look their best for an upcoming event.  You might be surprised to learn, however, that the grapefruit diet might not be as effective as it once was thought to be.

The principle behind the grapefruit diet is that it is thought that there is a certain chemical that is present in grapefruit and whenever it is eaten together with protein, it causes the body to metabolize fat.  In reality, the grapefruit diet is a low carbohydrate diet and in many cases, is also a low-calorie diet as well.  The fact that you are going to be eating a lot of proteins and fats along with the grapefruit is going to keep you full for a longer period of time and keep any of the food cravings that you may regularly have no minimum.

Eating this type of a diet has been reported to help individuals to lose up to 10 pounds in 12 days if they’re able to stick with it strictly.  The reality of it is, however, an individual that eats this way is not necessarily going to be losing that much fat in that short of a period of time.  More than likely, what you’re going to lose is water weight and whenever you go off of the diet and begin eating carbohydrates again, the water is going to come right back on.  As a matter of fact, many people can lose the exact same amount of weight in the same time frame without even any grapefruit at all.

That is why I recommend that if you really want to lose weight, you should skip the grapefruit diet and simply go on a modified diet that is reduced calorie and to get some regular exercise.  At the end of the day, a calorie is always going to be a calorie and as long as you’re keeping a deficit of around 1000 calories a day, you’re going to lose a healthy amount of weight every week which amounts to about 2 pounds.  Over the course of time, this will really make a difference in how you look and feel.

Of course, if you have something that is coming up and you need to lose a little bit of weight to look your best for that event, by all means you can try the grapefruit diet and you will probably lose weight as a result.  The only thing is, you should not expect those results to stick around for the long term and unless you’re able to stay on the grapefruit diet forever, the water weight that you lose quickly is eventually going to return.

The Skinny on the Atkins Grapefruit Diet

Wednesday, January 13th, 2010

If there is one thing that the majority of people are interested in today, it’s weight loss. The weight loss industry is a multibillion industry and people will do almost anything in order to take some shortcuts and cut some weight. The unfortunate thing is, many of these diets that are pushed on us are only the product of a commercial business and not really something that is going to help us to loose weight for the long term. There are a few exceptions, however, and some of these have been around for quite some time. An example of this is the Atkins grapefruit diet.

First of all, I need to point out the fact that even though many people are looking for the Atkins grapefruit diet, it is not actually a diet at all. What it is, on the other hand, is a made-up combination of two different diets that are very effective at helping you to lose weight but that can not be combined effectively. The first diet is the Atkins diet, made popular a couple of decades ago by a book that was written by Dr. Atkins. The grapefruit diet, on the other hand, has been around for quite some time and although nobody really knows where it came from originally, there have been many people that have lost weight successfully by using it.

The reason that the Atkins grapefruit diet could never exist is because the two different diets actually compromise each other in some way or another. For example, the Atkins diet is an extremely low carbohydrate diet that forces your body to go into ketosis, a condition in which your body will burn fat for fuel instead of carbohydrates. According to some of the research that I’ve read on the Atkins grapefruit diet, however, it requires you to eat a grapefruit or drink grapefruit juice with each meal. This would throw you out of ketosis, so it would make the low carbohydrate diet void.

The opposite is also true in the fact that the grapefruit diet is based more on fruits and vegetables, where the Atkins diet is based more on meat, eggs and cheese. It would be impossible for you to maintain the grapefruit diet while still trying to stick to the Atkins diet, as the type of foods that you would be eating would be contradictory to each other.

Instead of trying some kind of weird combination of the Atkins grapefruit diet, I would suggest that you either try one or the other or just go on a reasonable diet that is going to be easy for you to maintain. By reducing the number of calories that you are eating each day to well below what you are burning, you will lose weight consistently and you will not have to worry about tricking your body by cutting your carbohydrates down to nothing or eating grapefruit at every meal for its fat burning properties. A healthy diet will win out in the end every time.
